Known as the «Inland Paradise,» the province of Jaén, located in the northeast of the Autonomous Community of Andalusia, is a hidden gem that preserves a rich historical, artistic, culinary, and natural heritage. It offers an authentic refuge of Andalusian and Spanish tradition and way of life in an increasingly saturated and uniform world. Here are several reasons to discover our province and fully enjoy a unique experience in the south:
Jaén is the world capital of olive oil. The province produces 20% of the world’s total olive oil, thanks to having the largest human-shaped forest in the world—more than 65 million olive trees.
Olive oil makes our gastronomy truly unique. Jaén is experiencing a culinary revolution, which has made it the Spanish city with the highest number of Michelin stars per square meter. In addition, the tapa culture is deeply rooted in Jaén and is an essential part of our way of life. Going out for tapas—served for free with your drink—is a beloved ritual for locals, allowing you to enjoy the best of Spanish cuisine in an affordable and social way.
Jaén has the highest number of castles and fortresses in all of Europe. Historically a crossroads and melting pot of cultures, Jaén was for centuries the frontier between Muslim and Christian kingdoms. This medieval conflict led to the construction of a network of fortresses unique in Europe. The province is home to 237 medieval fortifications (discover some of them here: [1], [2]).
Jaén has the largest area of protected natural spaces in Spain and is known for its spectacular southern forests, many of which are designated biosphere reserves. Among them stands out the Parque Natural de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas, the largest natural park in Spain and the second largest in Europe.
Jaén is the only Spanish province with two UNESCO World Heritage cities: Úbeda and Baeza. These icons of the Spanish Renaissance inspired the urban design of many cities in Latin America.
Jaén is a city where history is alive in every corner—a gem of inland Andalusia that captivates visitors with its monumental heritage, Arab tradition, and serene charm. Nestled at the foot of Santa Catalina Hill, it offers a journey back in time through ancient fortresses, centuries-old baths, and one of the most magnificent Renaissance cathedrals in Spain.
The Cathedral of the Assumption, a masterpiece by Andrés de Vandelvira, stands majestically in the heart of the city. Its impressive façade and bright interior reflect the splendor of Andalusian Renaissance architecture and Jaén’s historical importance as an episcopal seat.
Just a few steps away, the Arab Baths, hidden for centuries beneath a Renaissance palace (Palacio de Villardompardo, 16th century), amaze visitors with their excellent state of preservation and the beauty of their vaulted rooms. These baths—recognized with the Europa Nostra Award for heritage conservation—are a living testament to the city’s Andalusi past and make up one of the largest sets of Arab baths in Europe. Nearby, the Baños del Naranjo (11th century) offer another hidden gem: a more intimate and lesser-known site that reveals the richness of Jaén’s Islamic legacy and its deep connection with water as a source of life and rest.
Jaén is also home to other remarkable monuments such as the Royal Monastery of Santa Catalina (now the Historical Archive), the Church of La Magdalena, the Old Hospital of San Juan de Dios, the Mudéjar Hall, the San Lorenzo Arch, and the Lizard of Jaén monument. The Jewish Quarter, where the Chapel of San Andrés and the Royal Monastery of Santa Clara stand out, along with the Museum of Jaén and the Iberian Museum—which houses an impressive collection of Iberian sculptures—immerse visitors in centuries of rich history.
Towering above the city, the Castle of Santa Catalina dominates the skyline. From its ramparts, the views over the endless sea of olive trees are simply unforgettable. This ancient medieval stronghold invites visitors to explore its towers and stroll through the Parador, where history blends with the peaceful beauty of the landscape.
Walking through Jaén means getting lost in its quiet alleyways, tranquil squares, and unique flavors—especially extra virgin olive oil, the pride of this land. It is a city that combines history, beauty, and authenticity, perfect for those looking to discover the deepest essence of Andalusia.
